I’m just off the paddle steamer Waverley, the oldest sea-going paddle steamer in the world at 70 years old. We’ve stopped at Rothesay and Largs; we spend four hours on Cumbrae playing croquet on the lawn ( really) at the Cathedral of The Isles; we ate fish and chips and drank a bottle of red wine as we powered home up the Firth.

The rain held off till we’d finished our game, when the boys were treated to a tour of the various instruments in the Cathedral.The wine tasted extremely mellow and hit the spot with accuracy. A day out like nothing else.

And I’m now in a state of collapse ...
