Hay bales

When I was young, all hay bales were square (or, I guess, that should be cubes, or at least rectangular parallelepipeds if you want to be pedantic).  Then everyone seemed to convert to the rolled bales which I had first seen in continental Europe.  Now the old-fashioned blocks are becoming more common again, it seems.

We spotted these mini haystacks on the way back home from a busy but excellent family gathering in the Midlands, to mark a couple of anniversaries and birthdays.  The journey back was accompanied by very welcome rainfall, the first proper rain we have had for a couple of months (although it made motorway driving rather unpleasant). The heavy rainclouds and a distant shower are visible in my blip.
