Serena

This is Serena our favourite waitress and now manageress at Söderberg our favourite café. Just returned from her holidays in Menorca, she lit up the place again with her smile and joie de vivre.

Our Indian Summer allowed His Lordship and me to sit outside and swelter in the sun while doing our crosswords, but it melted away quite suddenly when the clouds rolled in. It was so enjoyable while it lasted.

Later the Major, who featured in His Lordship’s Malayan sojourn in the ‘50s popped in with his partner to say hello as they passed through Edinburgh, and guess what - she was also a Merchant Maiden although a few years ahead of me at school. It’s strange but the informative years at that same educational establishment seems to have left an identifying mark on us ladies, certainly the two I’ve met in the last fortnight. It meant the men could talk men’s talk while we recounted tales involving our redoubtable headmistress, Miss Jennings- always a wonderful source of conversation.
