There Must Be Magic

Scenes from a Runaway American Dream

"In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream.
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines.
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin' out over the line.
Baby, this town rips the bones from your back.
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap.
We gotta get out while we're young
Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run . . . "
- Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run

Sunday brought another gorgeous sunny day, and so we went hiking up on the ridge, less than a half-hour's drive from where we live.

As we left the woods and got onto local highway I-99, I spotted the sun setting over Skytop. We stopped the car on top so I could get out and take some pictures.

And so it was that I snagged few shots of what turned out to be one of the brightest, most amazing sunsets I have ever seen! The highway was bathed in glorious red light: an invitation to adventure . . . ?

Did it make me want to leap into the car, throw caution to the winds, and take out for Nowhere, Anywhere, USA?!? You bet it did!

You've heard this refrain from me before, but I'll say it again:

"Tramps like us, baby we were born to run!" :-)
