Dividing a number by zero doesn’t produce an infinitely large number as an answer. The reason is that division is defined as the inverse of multiplication: if you divide by zero, and then multiply by zero, you should regain the number you started with. However, multiplying infinity by zero produces only zero, not any other number. There is nothing which can be multiplied by zero to produce a nonzero result; therefore, the result of a division by zero is literally ‘undefined.’

The morning starts early and heads rapidly downhill. The boys’ flat needs much much more than a quick hoover. The fridge is minging and full of rotting food. The oven is unspeakable. The floor needs mopping. The light fitting in the kitchen is broken. And there’s bits and pieces of belongings everywhere.

I put in a couple of hours, but then have to head to work. Claire’s having a bad day too - a touch of flu plus locking herself out of her flat (and hence her car). She takes the train to Edinburgh, where I meet her at the station. She picks up the baton of flat cleaning, meets the inspector, and reckons that (even after a further three hours cleaning) we’ll be lucky to get half the deposit back.

After tea we watch The Congress, a very strange movie, recommended by Dave T.
