Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Fans and maps

We have been watching "Handmade in the Pacific", a television documentary series dealing with the making and and cultural significance of traditional artefacts from the South Pacific.
I was reminded that up in the loft we have a bag of woven fans that we collected at the the first Pacific Arts Festival held in Fiji in 1972. This is one of the fans, intricately and skilfully woven from dried Pandanus leaves.

Extra. It has long been a bone of contention that on maps the Shetland Isles are usually shown in a box off the coast of Aberdeenshire rather than in their correct position far to the North of Mainland Scotland. Now a law has been passed to the effect that the  Shetland Islands must be represented accurately on official maps.
I respectfully propose a different solution to the problem.
