Quod oculus meus videt

Another Funeral

A lovely man, Cyril was the father of one of my first girlfriends. I probably wouldn’t have known about his death and funeral but for the coincidence that his son is our dentist and we were due to have a check up today. When we were contacted to rearrange the appointment and we were made aware of the reason, it proved fortuitous.

My memories of Cyril were of a man with a thirst for knowledge. He thrived on learning about things, something his children and grandchildren all inherited and has driven their successful careers. Cyril was born in Netherton in the Black Country, the son of a miner. He was bright and gained a scholarship to Dudley Grammar School before entering Birmingham University to study medicine. He specialised in gynaecology and obstetrics before becoming a GP. He also worked as a police surgeon and I clearly remember him telling us about his work, including showing pictures he’d taken at various crime scenes!

It was lovely to catch up with the family and to meet the new generations that have come along in the intervening years. Cyril was given a truly memorable send off and the family members took an active part in the funeral celebration.
