Common Enchantments

Saturday Hike

The ladies hiking group I belong to had our monthly Saturday morning hike at the Fort Jackson Passage of the Palmetto Trail.  The Palmetto Trail is  a continuous trail from the mountains of South Carolina to the Atlantic Ocean..about 500 miles when it is completed.   There are many sections of the trail completed but some areas there are gaps as land has to be purchased and the trail cut and maintained.   Part of the trail is along an old railroad track route that was given to the conservation foundation to use for part of the trail.   The trail is about 2/3 complete.

The Fort Jackson part of the trail is 16 miles long but we only walked 5 miles.   The youngest person hiking today was 52..everyone else was over 60 and one young lady was 72!   So we don't do too many miles at one time.   It was a perfectly COOL morning..55F and only got up to 73 by the time we finished!  I was so happy to hike without being so miserably hot and soaking wet with sweat!

The trail runs just outside the fences of Fort Jackson, an active Army training center.  We heard many gunshots as we started hiking but those stopped in the first hour.

We took a little spur trail to venture over to Weston Lake, a summer swimming and picnic facility for soldiers and their families.
It was a good day to be out in the woods.
