The Surrey Hills

Today began well with the sun breaking through the mist, and my brother and I set off to explore some of the villages and woods of the Surrey Hills. Surrey is seen by many as the haunt of wealthy English Tories and this may well be so, with the Surrey Hills area having been a favourite place for politicians, artists, novelists and poets to build houses for many years.

Having said that, this part of Surrey is extremely beautiful, with wonderful woodlands, ponds and streams and of course many charming villages.  We stopped in the village of Albury to look at some of the lovely buildings and then walked up the hill to visit St Martha's Chapel. Situated on a 574ft hilltop with only footpath access, it holds regular Sunday services and many weddings and enjoys amazing views for miles in every direction; I've put a picture on as an extra..

The sunshine didn't last beyond the morning, but we had a great day anyway and although we visited Friday Street, the Silent Pool and Abinger Common, we wished that we'd had more time to venture further afield! Plenty more to see on another day, but not this week!
