O2 Academy Brixton: Fat Freddy's Drop

More indescribable in large.
Extra: Hopepa photo opportunity
Back blip

Fat Freddy's Drop were absolutely incredible; I love their music (which defies classification: they're an NZ jam band with dub, jazz, soul, electronic, funk, and rhythm and blues influences?), and had heard that they were good live (or "meant to be heard live"...), but still hadn't anticipated the energy, musicality, irresistible groove, showmanship, and fun that they delivered...
This is a bit of a perverse shot to blip, given that both MC Slave and Hopepa are absent here (but had such dominating stage presences throughout most of the show), but I liked the sense of crowd (below) and atmosphere, which felt like the experience from our excellent seats. We arrived early so grabbed front-centre seats in the unreserved balcony...

There was a certain amount of (very) good-humoured centre-stage-man-ship going on, with the understated Joe Dukie grabbing attention with his silky vocals and impressive performance skills (multi-tracking his voice for effect, and harmonising with himself on the fly, while playing the guitar), Hopepa tromboning/tuba-ing/harmonica-ing/dancing/dressing up & stripping/soloing with aplomb, and MC Slave slinking about, leaping about, rapping, and masterfully firing up the crowd.
