A scramble up Mt Corrin

A crisp and clear morning, we headed for Mt Corrin. There are two routes up - the long, scenic and low incline one or the shorter sharper and big incline one. We took the latter - see extra for the storyboard. It was quite a muddy scramble up with breathtaking views and for part of the route we were accompanied by a rather cross chough. It's worth it though for there is a cairn on the top - a big one.  It probably dates back to the Bronze Age or beyond but has been knocked down, rearranged, robbed and reconstructed over the years. In 1863 it was the site of a celebration:

Mary Catherine Henrietta Bernard of Castle Bernard daughter of Lord Bandon married Colonel Aldworth on the 30th July 1863 and an address and copy of ‘God’s Holy Word’ was sent by Rev Freke and the tenantry of Durrus to which she returned thanks. At Dreenlomane Mine, owned by Lord Bandon, Captain Thomas set tar barrels alight on Mount Corrin which illuminated the sky all night and the 150 miners and their wives were treated to refreshments and similar celebrations were held in Carrigbui.

It's a good place to sit and admire the 360 views - Roaringwater Bay to the south, the Atlantic to the west, Dunmanus Bay to the east and wild scrub and pasture towards Barnageehy to the east.

The mince pies we bought coming home well deserved - yes, mince pies!
