Wide Wednesday Old Bridge

BobsBlips' wide theme this week is old. Thanks Bob.

This is Lennox Bridge, the first stone arch bridge erected on mainland Australia. It was constructed from locally-quarried stone in 1832-33 by David Lennox with a gang of personally selected convicts whom he trained in the skills of stone masonery and bridge building.

Situated at Lapstone in the lower Blue Mountains it formed part of the main route from Sydney to the west for almost 100 years. It was re-opened in 1982 and provides an alternate route down the mountain to Penrith.

The oldest stone span bridge in Australia is the Richmond Bridge in Tasmania.
