Bridge 1

Having visited craftylady I had the golden opportunity to add another bridge to my Shropshire Union Canal bridge series. Prior to today the furthest south I had ventured on the main branch was Bridge 92 near Nantwich. This is Bridge 1, the first bridge on the canal at Autherley Junction, where the Shropshire Union links up with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal. The 39 mile section from Autherley Junction to Nantwich was originally known as the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal.

The bridge dates from 1830 and is an original Thomas Telford design. This section of the canal was built between 1826 and 1835.

The extra is a cast iron mile post by the bridge that also dates from 1830
