Moth

I saw this moth fluttering into the Pittosporum hedge. Moths this colour are common here, but they are usually much smaller. It didn’t object when I gently pulled its leaf out to the light to photograph it. It even let me measure it- 42mm between the wingtips.

The best ID I could find was Ischalis variabilis, endemic to NZ. The size and wing shape match. The pattern is more subtle than illustrations, but the “variabilis” refers to the variety of colours and patterns found in this species.
