Desertion

We visited a deserted Mediaeval village, Wharram Percy, today, largely because we were desperate to find a sensible walk for Poppydog! This ruined church is the only building left from that period and, interestingly, expanded and contracted over the years - it used to have north and south aisles.

There's been a lot of research done at the site, which was abandoned in the early 16th century when the last residents were evicted to make way for sheep. Funnily enough, in the 18th century arable farming became more profitable and so people were encouraged back and a model working farm was built, now also gone.

It was a pretty walk down a classic wolds valley and was the highlight of a pottering day. Poppydog was bouncy and cheerful today which has made us happier too as she's been a bit under the weather.
