Port aux Basques

Back blip - but only by about seven months!

We had a smooth overnight crossing on the ferry from North Sydney to Port aux Basques, the cabins were clean and comfortable and we were able to have a good-enough sleep, all things considered. We sailed shortly before midnight and arrived in Newfoundland before 7am.

First impressions were of a fairly bleak and barren island, but there would be much to see during our ten day tour of Newfoundland and Labrador. We certainly noticed the coloured houses on the shoreline (pictured) which is a feature of many coastal communities here.

We boarded our bus and headed off to a nearby hotel for breakfast. Then it was a long drive to our first overnight stop at Port au Choix, where we also visited the National Historic Site and the archeological evidence of the first peoples of the area, going back about 6000 years.
