I learnt, decades ago, that it meant "hail and farewell I salute you, and goodbye used especially in a eulogy to a hero"
On the left - the Schlumbergera which did the honours about Yuletide. 
On the right - The smaller one, of a different hue, just beginning to show it prowess.
Almost out of sight, and certainly out of focus, a third one I can't remember flowering at all; NOT, for me, that that is ANY criterion. We shall see.
