Looking west along George Street from the 7th floor of No 40. 'The Place of Useful Learning' is the Univerity of Strathclyde. It was given this title by its founder John Anderson the natural philosopher and liberal educator at the forefront of the application of science to technology in the Industrial Revolution, and for the advancement of all working men and women. It was the UK's first technological university and takes its name from the Kingdom of Strathclyde.
