The Ormiston Yew
There are several famous old yew trees in Britain, one of which is the Ormiston Yew.  It is reckoned to be about 1000 years old and was considered to be old when it was mentioned in a charter in 1474.  When it was dangerous to convey his revolutionary ideas, the leading figure of the Scottish Reformation, John Knox, who was born over 500 years ago, preached his early sermons within the secluded interior of its canopy.
The yew is one of the few layering yews in Scotland and appears to be like an enormous natural ‘room.’ It consists of a central trunk which is about 7 metres in diameter with ten major branches extending to the ground in which they have taken root then subsequently growing up seeming like new trees but actually part of the original. Perhaps in several hundred years time it will have extended even further out but meanwhile some of its branches are supported by props.
