Common Enchantments

Old store

It was a bright (but chilly) sunny day today so my friend R and I decided we needed to get away from home so off we went.  We followed Hwy 321 from Columbia to York, South Carolina which is just this side of the North Carolina border.  This highway was once the major road between Columbia and Gastonia.

We stopped at several small towns to visit  the Chamber of Commerce to pick up any historical info and find out about sites we might want to see.    Winnsboro had so many old homes..some kept in good shape, some falling into a sad shape.  The main street was really sad as there were so many vacant buildings. We next went to Chester where met a wonderful old man on the street who gave us some local history lessons and found a booklet for us that was a walking tour of the old buildings there.

We drove on up Hwy 321 through some small crossroads and then through York.  York was once a thriving place but now it is the same as the other towns.  Trying to come back.    We finally made it to our destination which was Kings Mountain State Park, the scene of a battle between the Loyalists and the Patriots in 1780.  The Patriots clearly defeated the British army with this battle being the turning point of the Revolutionary War.    The mountain was steep and very forested; I can imagine it was more forested and very rugged when the war was fought over 200 years ago.   I did check out the campground here for camping spots.  It was great with sites that one could just pull through instead of backing the camper trailer into the spot.   And it is very much in the forest instead of being parking lot campsites.    Might be a future trip to this area in a couple of weeks.

On the way home we came back a different way and went to the little town of Blair.  There are no businesses there, just a few homes, not even really a town.  This little store was sitting in the afternoon sunshine so I had to see what it would look like in black and white.  A little derelict and almost falling in on itself.

A good day for photos.  I am not even going to look at them all tonight as it would take too long!     This blip is almost down to the wire to meet the mono monday challenge.  It is already Tuesday across the ocean!
