My amazing friend Diane with a tres leches cake for her 81st birthday ordered a few days ago.   Since then, her 54 year old (today!) son died yesterday from a cancer he’s been battling for maybe 16 months… but he has built such a legacy of PIF (playing/paying it forward) that I will never think of giving a donation to someone on the street or in a restaurant or coffee shop without thinking of him.    Didn’t know if we’d see her today but it was such a comforting time for 7 of us.  And we did manage to eat the cake (Mexican because their whole family managed a week together in Loreto, the week before we were there)…a last family together time.   OH my this is a hard time.
Eventually we did talk about the book of Susan’s, chosen long ago —American Sonnets My Past and Future Assassin, by Terrance Hayes, written by a black artist AFTER Trump was elected..Susan had the privilege to hear him at a writer’s conference so had some wonderful insights .   It was lovely to read some poetry aloud…and there were some laughs too… but mostly bittersweet and a joy to be together here. Thank goodness  for this group of friends.
