Daily bread ...

Well, not quite. I don't, that is to say, make bread every day. This loaf will last the two of us for a few days. But what I can say is that this is the bread we eat every day, because once you've made your own nothing else comes close. This is my favourite combination of flours and seeds - a bit of white, some brown, some rye flour, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. Today it rose beautifully and tasted as good as it looked.

I rarely nowadays eat what we tend to refer to as "duck bread". I like a thick slice of plain bread with Vegemite for breakfast (I'm hoping anyone who reads this knows what "plain bread" is, for I'm lost right now as to what else it's called), but the thin, moist floppy bread of a supermarket sandwich is just that and not something I buy. On two occasions I've been given it in a restaurant when I was expecting something decent - the last time this happened we didn't pay for our meal.

So, some basics in a day when we've heard that troops and bunkers are being prepared for a no-deal Brexit and over two million have signed a parliamentary petition to revoke Article 50 while others have begun to stockpile toilet paper.

That last says it all, really ...
