Opulence

Headed straight for St John’s Co Cathedral this morning. It is joint cathedral for Malta with that of the older St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina, the original capital.

There is much Baroque gold to be seen inside but I particularly liked these panels featuring the cross of Malta a symbol of the Knights of St John. There is also a couple of Caravaggio paintings, The Beheading of John the Baptist and St Jerome. Even the tombstones underfoot are colourful and decoarative.

After a coffee we walked down to the Lower Barrakka Gardens and had a look around the Seige Bell opposite overlooking the harbour, a memorial to the Second World War seige of Malta from 1940 to 1943 and to those who lost their lives.

Chris has now succumbed to the bug and has slept all afternoon. No romantic meal for two tonight - it’s our 44th wedding anniversary today. Never mind we will go out when we get home.
