Triqs of Valetta

Slept well over 12 hours last night and though still weary I thankfully seem to be coughing less. Went out for supplies (tissues and paracetamol - got both for under €3) and then it started to rain. We dashed into Cafe Cordina, Valetta’ version of Betty’s I think.

The rain had stopped when we came out so we walked down from the main streets to the far side of the peninsula to walk along the sea wall facing Sliema. Normally there is a ferry but nothing seems to be running at the minute. We then walked up the Great Seige Road beneath the bastion ramparts and eventually onto the walls themselves. Great views, though Sliema doesn’t look that enticing. Our walking guide in Mdina pointed out the contrast in building as the high rise buildings stood out against the rest from up there. Sadly he said there is going to be much more of this type of development on Malta.

The central streets (triqs) of Valetta are long and swoop down to the headland and Fort St Elmo, but many of the side streets, especially down to the harbour are stepped. This is not a place for people with walking difficulties!
I spotted this one with the red pillar box at the top, they are everywhere as are the red telephone boxes, left from the days of British rule. The other street leads down to the harbour - can you spot the chandeliers? Must go back to see if they are lit at night. You can also see the lovely box balconies, galleria, so prevalent here.

Speaking of chandeliers thought the one at the Cafe Cordina was a bit over the top! (Extra)

Chris got something for his lunch and we came back to the appt. I seem to have little appetite at the moment so I had a sleep. Didn’t miss much we’ve had a mighty thunderstorm!
