Luca in the lab

Luca sent me this photo today, with the words "Last four hour lab of the semester: finished!". I was thrilled to receive it as his photos (and communications) are few and far between. He has done incredibly well in his first year at Columbia and, naturally, I'm as proud as can be!

Today was a work day. The ICON proofs came in, so I have been wading through them. Not finished yet.

We were invited to dinner upstairs, along with Angie and Jeff and Dee and Omer. A delicious dinner, as ever, but overwhelming for Tiziano with so many people talking. I too found it hard to get a word in. Jeff and Angie introduced us to "the rack" after dinner (see the second photo), an amazing sound experience. You tie string to the oven rack, and then tie the string around your fingers and place them in your ears. Tapping sounds of different kinds are amplified and seem to vibrate right through to the centre of your being. It felt like being right inside the Duomo bell as it rings and resonates.
