Standing up for the forest

The Waimanalo community has risen up to fight a development of the forest and parkland behind the beach, known as Sherwood Forest. The government is knocking down the forest to build sports fields and a camp site (you can see the damage already in the photo), despite the fact that there are already sports fields and camp sites at the other end of the beach that could be fixed up and despite the fact that this forest is sacred for the Hawaiians and is the home of one of the few native Hawaiian animals. It seems that there is more to this development (like probably the next step is a hotel or apartments, who knows?). Anyway, the Waimanalo community know how to bring joy to a demonstration, with music and laughter.

We joined the demonstration on our way home from the Y. My sign says something like "Sacred sites for the community. Our land, aloha".

The morning was not so good with T.
