Baby snapping turtle

Thursday
Mid to late morning we went hiking at Rowe Woods. The ponds were as usual quite active with frogs and turtles, but besides the usual painted turtles, at one of the ponds a couple told us to look out for baby snapping turtles, which they had seen on recent visits. As we moved around to the other side, I was pleased to find this little fellow sitting on a log - I zoomed in to show the detail, but he’s only about 2-3 inches long at present. He’ll grow a lot bigger than that when he grows up! The weather had been really pleasant, and largely sunny when we left home, but as we walked, we noticed it became more overcast, and we began to hear the rumble of distant thunder, so we started walking faster! The wind started to pick up a bit, and I was afraid we weren’t going to make it back to the car before the rain came, but fortunately we did, with minutes to spare! In the evening, bell and choir practice as usual.
