A day in the life

Roots and Organs

Cultural day today on this very cold May day. Lovely blue skies but no more than 7 degrees warmth, quite unusual for this time of year. More common though are all the events that succeed one another in May.

I was personally interested in two events today. At noon a friend of mine had a vernissage of his exhibition "Roots", as he calls it. He's recently retired as a theatre musician, working for a professional theatre group in Kalmar called "Byteatern", The village theatre. Also he is very interested in photography and how to use images as a symbolic basis for life itself. this time he didn't use the camera but an ordinary scanner to produce his images. He put the plant, roots, soil and all on a flatbed scanner, set it to 4000dpi, pressed scan and had a cup of coffee while waiting for it to finish. It usually took about fifteen to twenty minutes to scan. He said most of the production time was spent cleaning the scanner. But the result was breathtakingly beautiful with a sharpness and detail I never would have imagined. He'd also composed music, representing his idea of what it must sound like when the roots are finding their ways through the soil and around obstacles on their way deeper and wider to provide life. You see one of his scans in the extra. A very beautiful exhibition.

In the evening at ten I went to an evening concert in the cathedral where they held this years organ festival. Seven organists played a piece each on one of the three organs used. The organ is probably the best suited instrument to range from the hardly audible to earth shaking power noise. I'm personally a bit puzzled by their choice of repertoar at this hour of the evening but I suppose they really want to show off with the great instrument in Kalmar cathedral. Shaken but not stirred or moved, you could call my impression of the evening. The experience was well worth the trip though.

Tomorrow I'm working at the theatre, let's see if that produces any blips.
