The Edge of the Wold

Before the bore

The estuary was almost flat calm this evening after the sunset. It's the first evening for a couple of weeks that Gus and I have been there, and the herons are back in numbers feeding in the shallow channel. Then there was a distant rumble, the bore was coming in, and calm became commotion (see extra of the bore as it passed us by carrying a couple of mallards up channel).

It's been a busy day today, working at home this morning, then a meeting in the southern Lake District that went as well as could be expected. A fly by by an osprey over Esthwaite, wood warblers heard from the car as I drove to and from the meeting, and my first singing pied flycatchers and redstarts of the year.

Back at home, I'm trying to get everything planted in the allotment before we go away on holiday. The french beans went in today, and the runner beans will go in Friday.  Excitement is building for a trip to an island we haven't been to before.

ps I was mindful as we did the estuary walk, that a friend and neighbour lost her son's dog yesterday. He chased after a bird, went into the water and immediately was lost. His body hasn't been found. So tragic.
