Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day My thoughts are with the one million Americans who have fought and died for their country in America's wars. I also devoutly would hope that there will be no more wars fought in our name, and wish I knew what it is that prevents us from learning from our mistakes and what compels us to continue to put our children and grandchildren in harm's way.

I like the way the entire goose community is standing sentry around the little goslings in the center. A lady nearby told me that there were seven goslings a few days ago...now there are only five....

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row'
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard among the guns below

WE are the Dead, Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
      In Flanders fields.

Take up or quarrel with the foe
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
   In Flanders fields

-John McCrae
