Starring: Fancy Echinacea

I have mentioned how much I enjoy the flowers that the Penn State horticultural folks place in the big planters outside the building where I work. Every season, the displays change. It's a big perk-me-up for all of us who pass them by. Late in the summer, they attract butterflies. It's a win-win all around.

On this morning, I noticed the first blooms on some new echinacea (or coneflower) that they've planted there. They are a really stunning shade of pink. These varieties typically have names like sunset and sundown and sunrise. You can see why they'd call them that. But to me, fancy is their name!
