South Stack lighthouse

Wednesday
Today we were blessed with another beautiful day, so we decided it would be a good day to visit South Stack lighthouse, which is located on a small island reached via a descent of 400 steps down the steep mainland cliffs of granite rising sheer from the sea to 60 meters. We were then able to view the exhibits in the former lighthouse engine room before climbing to the top of the lighthouse. South Stack is also a wonderful place to watch thousands of breeding seabirds including guillemots, razorbills and puffins, and there is an RSPB centre there, though this is currently being rebuilt, so at present this consists of a mobile information unit, mobile cafe and portable loos in a car park! However, the nearby observation tower is still open, and the staff there and in the car park were very helpful and informative. We saw quite a few puffins through our binoculars, but unfortunately none of them close enough to photograph! It was a great visit! Before we continued on, we also visited the Iron Age settlement across the road. After all our walking, bird watching and going up and down many steps, it was by now early afternoon, and Jen had read of a tea room at Llynnon Mill, Anglesey’s last remaining working wind mill. It was a great place, on a theme of Mad Hatters tea party, and the cakes were delicious! Finally, late afternoon, we went for another wonderful coastal walk, starting at the picturesque harbour and beach at Cemeas, and passing the small, historic St. Patrick’s church and it’s graveyard.
