USS Teddy Roosevelt

When I serendipitously got this shot, I knew it would be my blip for our last day in San Diego.  After our extensive tour of the USS Midway two days ago, we have a much greater appreciation for the floating city that is an aircraft carrier.  The size is incredible.  If you were to turn it vertical, it would be taller than any of those buildings in the background.

We spent the morning in Balboa Park, checking out its various museums and just enjoying the sunny weather and 68-degree temperatures.  It feels like the air conditioning is on all the time.  Really perfect.

In the afternoon, we headed over to Loma Point and the Cabrillo National Monument.  As we explored the outdoor area around the visitor center looking back at the city of San Diego, the harbor and trying to find the USS Midway, we realized that the USS Roosevelt had started to move and was making its way around Coronado Island past Lomo Point and out to sea.  Shortly afterward, a nuclear submarine returned from months at sea and entered the harbor to go to the sub-base.  We first saw it when we walked out to the Lighthouse to see the carrier go out to sea.  One lucky photographer was beaming that he had managed to get them both in one shot as they passed each other.

When the park closed, we dropped off our rental car and headed to the airport for dinner and a late night red-eye flight back to the east coast and home, arriving in Baltimore at 7 a.m. (4 am California time).  I managed to sleep for a couple of hours on the flight, but my husband did not.  There was a medical issue with one of the passengers to which he attended.  The passenger had taken a little too much sleep medication and was quite wobbly, but otherwise was fine.  The flight crew was quite grateful and managed to slip a significant amount of credit and flight miles into our Mileage accounts.  I see an upgrade in our future!
