Tower Town

St Gim is famed for the multitude of towers which give it such a unique look, especially when you approach below the hilltop walls. And the warnings were about right. It’s overwhelmed by tourists during the day but empties by the evening so you can have very relaxed stroll to your chosen osteria. But first I took an early morning hike through the olive groves for a chat with a local artist who pointed me in the right direction for the best views to snap.

After breakfast the second day of the city pass was used which included a particularly delightful browse around the modern art gallery. But first you had to walk through the archaeology museum. A place of boringness as one of my daughters would have described it. Full of broken pots. But the art upstairs was altogether more interesting. Plus a bonus of a temporary exhibition of Helmut Newton photos. Brilliant pictures. Semi erotic and almost all in mono.

Now writing this overlooking the pool which is beckoning. Must dash – I need to dive in.

It’s going to be more of this for the next couple of weeks. Bracing ourselves to venture further afield to see some other towns. But in this heat it’s going to need some discipline to get in the car. More to be reported later.
