APPLEBY-IN-WESTMORELAND

HOOORAY - I have my laptop back - yippeee, skips round room!!!!  It's only been 10 days but felt a lot longer.  It now means I can download my photos with Lightroom sooo much quicker.  Can't complain too much though because at least I had access to Lightroom thanks to Hubby's steam driven laptop!!!

Took G to Appleby today as it would be quieter.  It was a lovely drive up there, coming off the M6 at Tebay and going via Orton (no I didn't stop in the chocolate factory, far too tempting).   

On the B road to Appleby, which goes quite high up and over moorland there are lovely views, I mentally noted three places that I would be to park and take some shots.  This was not to be because by the time we came back the clouds had come down and it was very misty and you couldn't see beyond the road!!!  Aah well, excuse for another visit I guess.

Typical of many small towns these days sadly, signs of neglect, such as the beautiful market cross at the bottom end of Boroughgate (the main street) just needs a fresh coat of paint. One pub cum hotel closed down and boarded up.  Otherwise a pleasant little town.  Not an awful lot there but still interesting too look round.

As we were walking up Boroughgate I noticed a sign for the Almshouses and noticed that you can go into the courtyard, their tiny little chapel and their gardens.  This we duly did.  The blip is of the lovely courtyard.  Also tucked into one corner is a tiny chapel, so we went in.  It is extremely small, but interesting.  Whilst in there one of the residents came in and asked if we were interested in learning about it, so of course we said yes.  She was very informative and it has an interesting history thanks to Lady Anne Clifford.

We then just walked back down the street and went into the Royal Oak for a coffee and a sandwich.  Which was very nice.  Then we went into St Lawrence's Church, always a good place to find out about the history of a place.

After this G was feeling rather dizzy so we had to abandon the rest of the day.  I will have to go back on a nicer day for the photos of the views and a trip along by the river.

On the way back I noticed what looked like an old lime kiln or something similar, may have to investigate what that was.

Then into Kendal for my laptop.  It wasn't quite ready so we went for a coffee in the Art Gallery and walked round the Museum of Lakeland Life.  By that time LAPTOP WAS READY - WAHOOO.

Now just need to download and process the photos I've taken whilst its been away.
