Chewy drumstick

My sister and I hired bikes and cycled along the riverfront paths in each direction from Lisbon city centre. After exposing her white pasty pins to the sun all day she said she resembled a chewy drumstick lolly with distinct pink and white stripes on her body. It was a fair comparison.

This is the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries) and marks the age of Portuguese exploration during which they were the first European nation to visit or accomplish various things. Usually this was at the expense of local resident populations. Certainly the way that empires and discoveries are usually talked about doesn’t credit the existing residents with much in terms of achievement.
