A day in the life

Milestone

I thought todays blip could be about milestones since I have just reached one as a pensioner and because our real milestones along the roads are are protected by law and are everywhere to be seen along the older roads on Öland and on the mainland.

This particular milestone is placed on the mainland along a small country road. It's a 1/4 of a mile stone meaning that the distance between the stones were 2672 meters. A mil is also the regulated distance between the Inns. The inscription says 1852 (I think, it's hard to read the last number), which means there is thirty seven years till the government decided that 1 Swedish mil is 10000 meters. After 1889 the metric system was introduced as the norm in all of Sweden.

My own milestone, having reached the end of my working life, is more of a symbolic one. It feels important but is really just another marker along the road through an ever changing landscape waiting for the next inn.
