A Midsummer Night's Dream

Yesterday evening G, M and I went to see A Midsummer Night's Dream performed in the walled gardens at Holkham Hall, meeting H & M there.  Everyone enjoyed it, and it was laugh out loud funny. It was performed by The Lord Chamberlain's Men, a wonderful troupe of travelling male players recreated fifteen years ago along the same lines as the original troupe founded during the reign of Elizabeth I, for whom William Shakespeare wrote for most of his career. I've seen most of their productions and have seen it grow over the years and improve in the quality of scenery, costumes and performances. The current tour is 17 weeks long and includes over 80 performances in more than 70 different venues. They plan to tour indoor as well as outdoor venues soon. I was fascinated at the end to watch this small troupe of 7 actors taking down the stage and lighting and packing up to move on to their next performance the following day at Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire. I would wholeheartedly recommend seeing them on tour, especially as next year's production is 'toil and trouble ...a Scottish treat'!
