Don't Panic!

In the words of Corporal Jones of Dad's Army 'don't panic' as it's just part of the dressing of shops in Sheringham for the upcoming 1940's weekend. Obviously the weekend is a bit of fun and gives people a chance to dress up, eat spam sandwiches and such like, and enjoy period music and dancing.

In reality, Sheringham was a front-line coastal town in World War II, suffering regular bombing raids which killed several local people and damaged much of the town. The North Norfolk Coast was an identified invasion area that saw the town of Sheringham and surrounding countryside transformed into a garrison as a network of anti-aircraft batteries and coastal defence systems were established along the coast. You can still see the remnants of those defences in places.
