What's in the box?

Some of you will know straight away what it is. Some of you will look and say its a box. Well it is a box but it's a special box that everyone carried during WWII. Still don't know well check the extras for more of a clue...

More of the same today chucking and keeping, mostly keeping....

Oh yes, yesterday I said I'd tell you why there were so many bombs in a certain field quite close to where I lived. Well according to my father there was a wrecked Bristol Blenhiem aircraft located in this field during the war. The young lads from the village would regularly play there. One day however they were sitting in the aircraft being silly when smoke bombs started to fall all around them and some even penetrated the shell of the wreck. It scared them silly and they ran as fast as they could to get away....

So during the war the field where the wreck was located was used as a practice Bombing Ground by the RAF. Planes regularly flew over and dropped their payload on the wreck, and on impact there were two liquids inside the bombs, which, when they hit the ground or the target, they broke and mixed together making smoke so that the Bomb Aimer and Pilot could see who was best from the air.

The remains of the Blenhiem were removed after the war, but there were fragments of it lying around when I visited it with Dad. Dad also said that there was a submarine wreck there also but I never believed him as he was a great elaborator...

Day 35 - shoulder

All good despite working away in garage and putting food shop away which came at 12noon.

Fine sunny day - still need rain.

There are 2 pictures in the extras one is what's in the box and the other one is also a box which is largely superceded these days with the arrival of tissues. Looks Edwardian, possibly made by an amateur and is in a sorry state.

Answer to what's in the box tomorrow...

Ps how do we know how the bombs worked.?
Well Dad and some other boys found one that hadnt exploded so took it home to experiment - but that's another story....
