Hong Kong Phooey

We 'WhatsApp'd' Ben today and then let him speak to the dog and then the cat Leia who really did seem to recognise his voice and came and sat very near the phone.

Thanks to all the people that have asked after him.  He (and other students) have been advised not to leave the CUHK campus, and since there are no trains running it would be difficult for him to get anywhere anyway.  There was a lot of violence and destruction on Friday and today and it's an open secret that the Chinese army, the PLA, are now in Hong Kong to assert control so I'm happy for him to be stuck - and safe.

He is being kept informed of the situation daily by CUHK and Leeds University have also been in touch to see how their international students are coping.

Most Hong Kong students leave campus to go home at the weekends so it's been pretty quiet, the gym is closed, most of the food outlets on campus are shut and the shop shelves are bare.  So the worst it's got so far is that he's quite hungry and a bit bored!

Tomorrow is a Bank Holiday and there will be a student strike on Tuesday, so no lectures again for the next two days, and no possibility of exploration and travel.
