Those Mancunian Thetans

The strap line of our Tom Cruise film Jack Reacher (spoken in that so very deep growly tone of voice-overs) was "The law has limits. He does not". Me and MrsB were taking advantage of those great 'bog-off' (Buy-One-Get-One-Free) cinema tickets from Orange Wednesday and had dashed into Manchester.

We were slightly early so we went off in search of a coffee shop. We drew a blank on the bit of Deansgate we were on, but I did spot the Scientology church shop, and the irony was not lost on me (Tom Cruise being the Scientologist's most high profile advocate). It has actually been here in the same spot for more than 20 years. I took a quick photo. If you look carefully you can see some Thetans floating in the ether.

Good enough film I suppose, if you want your entertainment thrilling but not scarey, and violent but predictable. We were temped with Life of Pi, but wanted to read the book first.

Postscript: Scientologists believe that souls ("thetans") reincarnate and have lived on other planets before living on Earth. The term and concept was created by sci-fi writer and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, who adopted the Greek letter theta to represent "the source of life and life itself".
