A wayside cross

This morning the walking group went on a walk around lanes near West Felton.  I had to drive through a flooded lane to get to the start due to all the rain and Saturday's snow.

The trees and bracken were beautiful colours and we enjoyed the walk despite the lanes being flooded in several places (extra photo).

The main photo is of a cross some distance from any habitation.  It is erected to Wing Commander D S S Wilkerson aged 27 years. After 46 ops as pilot of a Halifax bomber he was killed in Sept. 1944 when a passenger on a domestic flight crashed into the hillside. The US Airforce posthumously awarded him the Silver Star for gallantry.  His friend made and erected the cross. Local people maintain it.

It was poignant to pass this on Armistice Day. We held the 2 minute's silence on our break which coincided with 11.00am.
