Fruit cake on holiday

One of my most affectionate memories from my childhood was that mum always made a fruit cake to take on holiday.

As we have recently been experimenting with making fruit cakes, we decided to continue the tradition.  Not just fruit cake, but Wensleydale cheese.  They've both travelled from the UK via Sweden, and are none the worse for it.

We've travelled a long way South today, overflying my sister in Spain, and ending up in Tenerife.  We got a taxi from the airport to a little village just into the mountains - the taxi driver thought it was an odd destination for a holiday.  But we prefer to be outside the obvious tourist destinations.

We'll hire a car tomorrow to explore the sights of Tenerife.  I say that with confidence - we would normally have arranged this in advance but struggled with organising it over the internet at a sensible price.  Our Spanish teacher was going to help with phone calls, but unfortunately was unwell, and cancelled our last 2 lessons.  Hey ho - we'll return to the airport tomorrow, hopefully by public transport, and should be able to negotiate something.

But we're sitting here in shirt sleeves at 9.30, so our aim for some winter warmth looks to have been fulfilled.
