Life through the lens...

Times Past

When mum was 2 years old they moved from Scotland to Bradford.
( Which was very different in those days.)
My grandfather had got a job as head gardener to Sir James Hill, who then lived in a mansion called  "Wellwood" on the outskirts of the town in the village of Allerton.
They had a cottage on the estate called " Rose Cottage" overlooking Chellow Dene reservoir.
The photos in extras are some my mum took when she was 18/20 years old.
So today we decided to go and see if we could find the house, and have a walk round the reservoirs.

As you can see in the collage we found the house, which has been extended now. Still the same railings, but almost covered by the hedge.
Also still standing are the gates to Wellwood, although that was pulled down many years ago. There are now houses where the lawns and flower beds used to be.
We had a lovely walk round the lakes. It was very peaceful.
I don't think that would have changed much, except there was no fountain.

When we came back we saw a gentleman tidying up the drive, and went to have a chat with him.
He was fascinated to know some of the history of the house. He said the original had just two bedrooms, but it had now been extended to 4.
Many of the original features were still there.
Told us to call again next time we were in the area.

I Like how she had written under the photo taken in 1924:
" Ours is a nice house ours is"

She would be pleased it still is a nice house.
