Avebury

In these stones, Awen sings

Endings and beginnings. At the turn of the year I decided on a short pilgrimage to Avebury, my first visit there. Inspiration came from a dream a couple of days ago, about the ruins of a stone monument, so my visit and the photo is a response to it. Awen - flowing inspiration or spirit, creativity in action - sang clearly from the stones, attracting hundreds of visitors on an otherwise uninviting, chilly and overcast day.

I've deliberately misquoted poet Gwyneth Lewis, whose words "In These Stones Horizons Sing" adorn the facade of the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff and were the title of Karl Jenkins orchestral piece, commissioned for its' opening. Gwyneth is quoted as saying "The stones inside the theatre literally sing with opera, musicals and orchestral music." At Avebury, the stones sing a different song but are equally inspirational.
