Tiny pieces

I used to go to Farfield Mill, Sedbergh regularly, usually with friends as we kept up with textile exhibitions and had lunch as well. Then a year or so ago it was in financial trouble and was on the point of having to close. Thanks to various funding contributions (some from the Art Fund hence we got into the Mill free with our Passes)and a sale of shares (not unlike Blipfoto), the place has undergone a complete refurbishment and has a new lease of life.

We went today as I realised that there was a Quilt Art exhibition that I wanted to see and was in danger of missing. The exhibition was excellent, but we were also impressed with the way the Mill is now looking and working. As well as the exhibition of the history of the Mill, there are many open studios and some wonderful work being carried out - weaving, quilting, book-making etc. I was very taken with some beautiful machine knitted pieces and it was great to watch the designer/maker at work. I bought a lovely fair isle headband.

And there was this guy working on a large mosaic. He uses oddments of marble that he sources from around the world, as he travels about. The work he is currently doing is a commission from Norway. He and a few other artists are working on a huge piece of flooring, I wasn't quite sure exactly where it was going. We were curious as to how he was going to get it to Norway, but he didn't see it as a problem! We chatted and then left him to it - he has a deadline to meet.
