twinned with trumpton

Out around 9; a 19 to town; a spare £1 cable for the phone at Poundland (they had a sale on! - no; really!!) and off to haymarket to catch a train to Coatbridge Sunnyside.
An hour later we were in Summerlees, downing a quick coffee with the lads' grandparents and then a most enjoyable 90 minutes of North Lanarkshire heritage - steel, iron and associated heavy industry. Factories just don't exist like they used to; it's hard to explain to the lads just how big and how noisy and smoky this part of the world used to be.

Then lunch at Guidi's ( a recommendation from the folks' neighbour - a perfectly fine Italian) before we were dropped off at the currently named Penny Cars Stadium (Excelsior as was) - the home of Airdrieonians FC. #14 on the tour of the 42 Scottish Football League grounds. If Summerlees provided an interesting 90 minutes, Airdrie did not. 2nd in League One, they were pitted against 2nd bottom Forfar and frankly neither team acquited themselves well - Pensioner take note - your berth in next round of the cup looks assured.
Airdrie sklaffed in a winner in the 71st minute and come the final whistle, we took ourselves off into the night and the mile trek to Drumgelloch to catch the train back east.

A detour via Hers for an hour to say hi, before a 47 saw us safely home and some FA Cup highlights to remind us what proper football looked like.
