Holiday Day 4.
Quite a long walk today to a log cabin very near the Russian border. The sun came up and was catching the trees at just before 11am (2nd extra), was visible briefly about 1pm(1st extra) and set by 3.15pm when this pic was taken.
We stopped en route and a fire was lit while we ate our sandwiches and drank hot chocolate, then on to the cabin.
It was heated by a wood-burning stove and lit by candles in candelabra and soon got very cosy. Cooking was done on a gas burner (and water boiled on the stove) by headtorch, the toilet was 50m away (with polystyrene seats to prevent freezing and peat to throw down) and another cabin had bucket showers and a sauna. We had a side room with someone else, the rest had a wide bench in the only other room and all had cosy sleeping bags.
Late evening we crossed the frozen river to look for the Northern Lights, they weren't playing but the stars were amazing.
What else do you need to celebrate the New Year? Oh yes, some alcohol and we had that, too!
