The Edge of the Wold

History repeating

The third Sunday in January is the fixture for Potato Day at Greenodd, and this was the second year we have been.  I think there were fewer varieties this year than last, but still more than enough of the target ones to satisfy. This time I came away with four different sorts, including Pink Fir Apple, a knobbly, little earthy tuber that is a main crop variety and therefore a risk for blight: definitely worth a try though.

Then we popped into Ulverston to find a new bed and winter coat for Gus. He even tried out one bed, immediately getting into it and settling down as soon as I put it on the floor. He's always attracted to the ones that are a tight fit, which is not so good now that he is getting stiff and achey. He was eventually persuaded out and we bought a larger one.

Then a walk from Greenodd over to the River Leven and Roudsea before completing the circuit back in Greenodd with tea and cake at the excellent Bakehouse. Gus tried out one of his new coats, and I have to say that Wifie was right and he was walking better for having his back and hips covered.

The day began with the deepest frost of the year to date, I have a feeling the winter has colder spells to offer yet, and those breeding ducks at Leighton Moss may be caught out if the water freezes.

I'm feeling much better today, thanks for the good wishes this last few days.
